PRESS STATEMENT: BANTAH TPPA – Objectives, Activities and Organisation

PRESS STATEMENT

23 September 2013

Bantah TPPA notices that there are misrepresentations and conflicting statements with regards to BANTAH and have decided to issue a youtube video to explain BANTAH’s objectives, activities and its organisation. The link is as follows:-

Bantah TPPA was given birth by individuals and NGOs realizing the dangers and threats posed by the TPPA. Proposed by BLINDSPOT, Majlis Tindakan Eekonomi Melayu (MTEM) and the Anti FTA committee in June 2013, it is currently the largest Anti-TPPA coalition in the country, strongly comprised of 60 NGOs and 9 coalition councils e.g Malaysian Aids Council (MAC) ,  Malaysian Council of Tobacco Control (MCTC), Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC), Majlis Perundingan Melayu (MPM), each of whom represents at least 50 NGOs.

Bantah is also participated by the youth groups such as Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) and also PKPIM, Islamic movements such as IKRAM, Majlis Perundingan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM) and Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) and several Malay and Chinese chambers of commerce.

The movement against the TPPA is actually not new–it has started since early last year. Bantah is an apolitical coalition that has no political interests, business interests and is not representing any specific race or quarters.

Bantah was founded upon genuine and serious concerns regarding the danger of the TPPA that is planned to be signed by the government.

Bantah rejects the TPPA. Despite that fact, Bantah has submitted 75 redlines (issues which are detrimental to the nation) to the Prime Minister, stating that if the government still insist on signing the TPPA, the government is urged to ensure that these redlines be strictly adhered to without compromise.

Despite the connotation of the name Bantah, that in itself can sound negative, Bantah is not objecting purely just for the purpose of objecting but is offering solutions and alternatives to ensure Malaysia’s interests are safeguarded.

Bantah comprises of academicians, trade experts, law experts, health experts, environmentalists, patent experts, scholars and professionals from all sectors of the industry and society.

All proposals and views of Bantah were first referred to the experts who also form Bantah’s committee.

Bantah has met and will continue to meet with all quarters from all walks of the society, from fishermen, farmers, planters, professionals, to all political parties, government agencies, government ministries, ministers, including the MITI minister himself and even the Prime Minister DS Najib Tun Razak.

Bantah also welcomes all political parties from both sides of the divide to submit their objections with Bantah. TPPA transcends both political borders and parties.

Bantah will continue to hold forums and roadshows all over Malaysia to create awareness among the people.

Bantah urges all Malaysians to rise, come forward and be proactive in order to know more about the TPPA negotiation that will decide the future of our nation and our future generation.

Come, join Bantah! Save Malaysia!

Undersigned, BANTAH TPPA

KENYATAAN AKHBAR

23 September 2013

Ayuh, sertai Bantah! Selamatkan Malaysia!
